Three Poems by Lee Kuei-shien(Taiwan)
Flowers Offering 獻花
Bangladesh was new born
during the independence war in 1971,
three millions soldiers bled into the land,
their heroic souls brighten the sky.
The National Martyrs’ Memorial
has been maintaining the historical witness.
My poem “The Elegy in Bangladesh”
written in 1974 as a record document.
My first program arrived at Dhaka is
flowers offering to the warriors for independence,
since independence is the common language
in the first lesson of national poets.
The spire monument erects shining with sun and moon,
one hundred acres of wilderness for souls to wander.
I open boundless poetical space
being the fermenter for willing of Taiwan Independence.
Migratory Birds in Campus
The natural ecological lake in campus
accommodates migratory birds from Siberia
coming in flocks and
leaving one group after another group,
attracting the mass to watch
their left shadows.
Under the banyan canopy in the university
I recite my poem “Resident Bird”
for the migratory birds loving students.
In the lake gradually empty out
what left behind to bloom in silence
is the red lotus one by one.
Shaheed Minar*
In front of the Martyr Monument
the youths sing in praise of peace,
the children paint their vision in competition.
Our tour guide Khan surprises to find
the design of 228 badge on my hat,**
the sad memorable happenings in different countries.
Half century after the liberation of Bangladesh
the butcher committed crime in murdering Moslems***
was eventually sentenced to death.
The belated justice represents
a substantial justice in Bangladesh.
In my home country Taiwan
how to write the justice is still unknown.
On Martyr Monument Square
sun shines brilliantly
spreading on bright good earth,
over the smiling faces of Bengali people.
*The Shaheed Minar (Martyr Monument) is a national monument in Dhaka,
established to commemorate those killed by the East Pakistan government, in
the event of Bengali Language Movement demonstrations of 1952.
**228 incident, also known as February 28 Massacre, was an anti-government
uprising in Taiwan, happened on Feb. 28, 1947.
***On 28 February 2013, the tribunal sentenced Delwar Hossain Sayeedi to death
by hanging for two charges among the eight committed during the Liberation
War of Bangladesh in 1971.
(Delwar Hossain Sayeedi)
